Homemade Mayo

Everyone needs to know how to make homemade mayo! Mayonnaise isn’t something I use a lot so I don’t really keep it in the fridge. However, I occasionally cook with it and when I do, I just make it!

Most store bought mayonnaise is filled with terrible ingredients that are inflammatory to the body, add to weight gain, heat disease and more.

Real mayo is made with simple ingredients. As long as you use good quality ingredients, it is loaded with healthy anti-inflammatory fats… that means its good for you!

Homemade Mayo has only a few ingredients, that I bet you already have on hand, and maybe takes 5 minutes to make:

  • egg

  • lemon juice or apple cider vinegar

  • salt

  • ground mustard seeds

  • avocado or olive oil

As compared to store bought mayo like:

Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise Soybean Oil, Water, Whole Eggs And Egg Yolks, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Sugar, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Calcium Disodium EDTA (Used To Protect Quality), Natural Flavors*

*I have a problem with soybean oil (never use please as this is very inflammatory), sugar (not necessary, see my post on sugar), natural flavors (I never trust this unless a company reveals what those natural flavors are… it can be things that are natural but I would never eat) and not crazy about Calcium Disodium used as a preservative.

Hellmann’s Light Mayonnaise

Water, Soybean Oil, Modified Food Starch (Corn, Potato)**, Sugar, Distilled Vinegar, Whole Eggs And Egg Yolks, Salt, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Sorbic Acid** And Calcium Disodium Edta (Used To Protect Quality), Natural Flavor, Paprika Extract, Vitamin E*.

*The Light version is even worse for you in terms of ingredients. Adding Modified Food Starch (highly inflammatory and possible GMO’s

Store Bought that I approve:

I will say there is one brand of mayo that I am more than happy to buy… Primal Kitchen Avocado Mayo and the various flavors. Have you tried the Chipotle Lime… yum! It is made simple, clean ingredients with the addition of rosemary extract, which acts as a preservative. This mayo is definitely CLRW approved!

Regular Ingredients:

Avocado Oil, Organic Eggs, Organic Egg Yolks, Organic Vinegar, Sea Salt, Organic Rosemary Extract.

Chipotle Lime:

Avocado Oil, Organic Eggs, Organic Egg Yolks, Organic Vinegar, Water, Sea Salt, Organic Lime Juice Concentrate, Chipotle Powder, Lime Granules, Organic Garlic Powder, Organic Rosemary Extract.

 

Back to homemade mayo… While it’s best to use an immersion blender, any blender will do.

Homemade Mayonaise

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • ¼ tsp ground mustard
  • 1 cup light avocado or olive oil (I prefer Primal Kitchens Avocado Oil)

Instructions:

  1. Put egg, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, salt and ground mustard in a tall jar.
  2. Use an immersion blender to blend everything together.
  3. Once blended well, turn the blender to low and slowly add the oil. Continue to blend moving the blender up and down until it is thick and creamy.
  4. Keep mayo in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to serve. This will last about 1 week in the fridge. Enjoy!

Notes:

This can also be done in a regular blender but it seems to work best with an immersion blender.
